Long Night of Sciences 2023

Fluorochemical topics are well-received by visitors

Jun 18, 2023

During the 2023 Long Night of Science, members of SFB 1349 also presented on fluorine chemistry, which generated considerable interest.

As an interdisciplinary field, fluorine chemistry touches on many aspects that are relevant to the daily lives of non-chemists as well. Almost everyone has used fluorinated medications at some point, such as flurbiprofen, which is found in throat lozenges. Modern fuel cells, on the other hand—which could play a role in future propulsion systems—cannot function without fluorinated membranes. In addition to these topics, which were primarily discussed at NatLab, fluorine chemistry also featured in Prof. Sebastian Hasenstab-Riedel’s very popular experimental lecture and, of course, in many other conversations between SFB researchers and interested participants at the Long Night.
